A Sanctuary at Ushirika
This January, construction on our biggest project yet, Ushirika School was completed! We are so thankful for our community for helping ensure that the 600+ students who attend Ushirika will have a safe place to go to school for years to come.
Our next project is building a dormitory for Ushirika high school girls, a sanctuary where students can fully focus on their studies.
Ushirika is located in Kibera - one of the oldest and biggest informal settlements in Africa. Living here means facing housing, food, and healthcare challenges that no one should have to endure.
We’re building this dorm to give our students a chance to pursue their education without having to worry about their safety, household obligations, or distractions.
According to Girls Not Brides, 9 out of 10 of the most difficult countries for girls to get educated in are in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Kibera, high poverty rates often leads to girls being pulled out of school once they reach adolescence to join the domestic workforce and help their families pay for basic necessities.
Building a dormitory will give the girls at Ushirika School a space to fully immerse themselves in their studies and puts them on the path to gaining meaningful employment.
USAid reports that an extra year of secondary school for girls increases their eventual wages by 10-20%. This not only benefits them but helps to uplift their communities.
Studies show that women re-invest 90% of their income back into their families, compared with 35% for men. Investing in a girl’s education is investing in the future of her community and country!
The challenges associated with living in poverty makes girls in Kibera at high risk for mental health issues which can greatly affect their ability to learn.
A dormitory not only serves as a space for students to complete their education, it also provides the girls with an uplifting environment where they can be away from the challenges they may face at home.
Studies done by The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development show that "students learn better when they view the learning environment as positive and supportive". This is exactly the kind of environment that the Ushirika School dormitory will foster.
Did you know that 1 in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa miss school during their menstrual cycle?
A dormitory provides clean washroom facilities and menstrual resources, eliminating the risk of preventable health problems and keeping girls on the path to completing their education.
Lack of private toilets in Kibera is also associated with increased risk of sexual assault. This makes public washrooms a site of anxiety and fear for women and girls, creating a cycle of gender-based disadvantages.
The Ushirika School dormitory will provide safe and private washrooms, ensuring that lack of sanitation facilities won’t push girls off the path to education.
We know that education is a crucial part of ending poverty and achieving gender equality worldwide.
When one girl gets the opportunity to go to school, they are given the resources they need to lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.
A dormitory will ensure girls are able to complete their education and continue on their path to changing the world! Please consider donating today to help build this sanctuary for Ushirika students.
